Spire Rock |
A backcountry wild setting within about 20 miles of Detroit Lake. Spire Rock is located immediately next to the hikers trail, so easy access to the initial SE Face route is quick. |
A prominent ridge crest perched rock spire, with all day sunshine surrounded by a extensive fir forests. Spire Rock is the greater of the two pinnacles and the more commonly ascended objective. The X-Spire is a shorter pinnacle on the opposite side of Triangulation Peak. |
Initially drive on a paved highway, then on a paved secondary road, and finally about 4 miles of maintained gravel road to the trailhead. |
A well-maintained popular hikers trail leads to the Triangulation Peak where Spire Rock and X-Spire are both located. The trail is a short 1.5 miles long and is mostly flat with a bit of brief uphill near the destination. |

The east ridge is about 190' tall (angled with ledges), and the west face is about 500' tall vertically (with rounded aspects). |
Well-weathered basaltic volcanic spire, generally rounded with numerous sloping edges and ledges. Technical adventure climbing suitable for competent individuals who can analyze difficult terrain challenges with success. |

The short leads are 100-140' long. A few routes are multi-pitch. |
A minor rack of cams, stoppers, quick-draws and a helmet. |
Less than 1/2 dozen routes (variations and routes), mostly of the lower grade type (5.5 to 5.8) on both pinnacles. |
Some loose debris so a helmet is recommended. Be ware of hikers on the trails. |
Mosquitoes in summer through most of August. |
On Forest Service managed land, and a Northwest Forest Pass is required for parking at the trailhead. |
