Wolf Rock is an impressive 900’ volcanic andesite (Ta3) massif that ranks as the largest monolith in Oregon with a summit perched at an elevation of 4535’. This virtual mountain is an old volcanic remnant plug that was exposed after surrounding softer soils eroded away.
Wolf Rock is home to one of Oregon’s outstanding classic rock climbing routes pioneered in the early ‘70s. Wayne Arrington and Mike Seely in a multi-day effort they established the 8-pitch grade IV 5.9 A2 (III 5.11a/b) route Barad-Dûr (Dark Tower) on the main 900’ south face headwall. The route ascends very steep terrain up to the awe-inspiring dark roofs, breaking past the improbable roofs a few hundred feet below the main summit.
Today, most climbers suffice with faster rewards by aiming for the south side rock climbing opportunities. The standard scramble route to the summit (West Gully) is a great 1-2 hour uphill blast, but do expect several hundred feet of very exposed (3rd class) smooth rock slope terrain.
The Conspicuous Arch: For the sport minded climber a stellar selection of fixed bolt routes exists under the great Conspicuous Arch, a prominent feature on the sunny south side of Wolf Rock, just a mere 5-minute walk from your vehicle.
There are ultimately three common sources for directions and beta to the Wolf Rock climbing site:
1. Northwest Oregon Rock
2. Rock Climbing Western Oregon, by Greg Orton
3. Rock Climbing Oregon, by Adam Bolf and Ben Ruef
